BMW N54/N55  inline 6-cylinder twin-turbocharged engines, found in many of BMW's production vehicles, are prone to carbon buildup on the intake valves due to its direct injection system. The combination of positive crankcase pressure and a typical crankcase ventilation system, when paired with direct injection technology, leaves the intake valves vulnerable to oil accumulation on their backs and valve stems.

BMW N54 performance and maintenance 

 BMW engine are powerful and tuner friendly engines - however, they are not without fault. As you now probably know the valve cover is one of the weak points in your engine. We recommend you replace your valve cover with a fresh, Genuine BMW valve cover when you start to see oil seeping out of your valve cover gasket. Often times, these plastic valve covers crack and cause a myriad of running issues.   In cases where the PCV is integrated into the engine cover, replacement is necessary when increasing boost pressure. 

BMW N54 Maintenance

Downpipes remove the restrictive OEM converters, enabling exhaust to flow more freely and resulting in higher power and torque output. Since increased boost levels generate more heat, cat less downpipes allow your performance vehicle to run at higher boost settings.

Oil pan gaskets are a common source of leaks in any engine and typically start leaking after a few years.

Note: It is also required to replace the oil pan screws once they have been removed.
